Prof. Rajendra Prasad is currently Director Medical Education and Professor & Head of Department, Pulmonary Medicine at Era’s Lucknow Medical College and Hospital. Prior to this he was working as Director, Vallabhbhai Patel chest Institute (VPCI), Delhi. He has also served as Professor & Head of Department, Pulmonary Medicine, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow and former Director, U.P. Rural Institute of Medical Sciences and research, Saifai.

Prof. Prasad completed his MBBS (1974) and MD (1979) from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow. He received advanced training in Pulmonary Medicine including Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy and Lung Cancer from Japan. He is also honorary consultant to Armed Medical Services, India in respiratory Diseases. Prof. Prasad is also currently the Vice President of South Asia Association of Allergy, Asthma and Applied Immunology and Vice Chairman national task Force for involvement of medical Colleges in revised National Tiberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP). He has been International Governor of American Colleges of Chest Physicians (USA). He has a unique distinction of being President of all major scientific bodies in the field of Pulmonary Medicine in India like, National College of Chest Physicians India, Indian Chest Society, Indian College of Allergy, Asthma & Applied Immunology, Indian Association for Bronchology and Tuberculosis Association of India.

Besides several prestigious fellowship of national and international organizations, he was awarded Fellowship of The National Academy of Medical Sciences India, American College of Chest Physicians (USA) and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glassglow). He has supervised about 165 Researches and Published 295 original articles, reviews and book chapters. He also authored 7 books including 3 books on Tuberculosis and an Atlas on Fiber Optic Bronchoscopy based exclusively on Indian patients. He has presented over 1300 guest lectures, scientific papers at various national & international meetings.

Prof. Prasad is an eminent Chest Physician of our country. Apart from being a Clinician par excellence, he is also a very popular medical teacher in Pulmonary Medicine. He has devoted all his energy in promoting medical education, patient care and research. Within 14 years of heading the department at KG Medical University; he has successfully transformed the department of Tuberculosis into a well recognized department of Pulmonary Medicine by introducing and developing more than a dozen specialist services including Video Bronchoscopy- first of its kind in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Medical Thoracoscopy, Thoracic Oncology Unit, Air Pollution related diseases, Diagnostic Centre and Sleep Lab. Prof. Prasad has been a mentor to many students who are now assuming different positions in Pulmonary Medicine throughout the country.

Academic Activities

(Conducted daily from Monday to Saturday in the afternoon)

  • Saturday: Lecture by Faculty
  • The academic activities are supervised & held under the guidance of faculty members. In addition to above CMEs are conducted once in 2-3 months.


    Diagnostic & Treatment Facilities

  • A fully equipped DOTS centre is running under the department as per the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme DOTS. The centre caters the Anti Tuberculosis Drugs to the patients for free. The DOTS Centre has been judged as the best functioning DOTS Centre among all the Centers in UP.
  • Spirometry available with the department is useful for diagnosing and treating obstructive, restrictive lung diseases, and upper airway obstruction. It is also useful in evaluating preoperative cases.
  • Flexible Fiber Optic video. Bronchoscope is a telescopic device that visualizes the large airways and allows diagnostic and or therapeutic intervention. The bronchoscope has facility for teaching the Post Graduate students as well.
  • BIPAP machine is available in the ICU. This machine provides Non Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation in patients who require ventilatory support. Non invasive means of delivering ventilation is a novel device which reduces the patient stay and prevents complications related to invasive ventilator.
  • Invasive Mechanical Ventilator is available in the ICU. The invasive ventilators are indicated in patients with respiratory failure, where non invasive ventilators have failed or the patient is unconscious.
  • Nebulizer Machine is available for delivering nebulized inhaled drugs to patients suffering from Airway diseases.
  • Arterial Blood Gas Analyzer Machine is available in the ICU. This machine is useful for determining arterial Oxygen Carbon Dioxide level in patients suffering from acute or chronic respiratory diseases.
  • A full fledged Polysomnography for diagnosis and management of snoring, sleep apnoea & other sleep related disorders is also available.
    Smoking Cessation Clinic for preventing diseases like COPD.
    Pulmonary Rehabilitation for chronic lung diseases.
    Determination of diffusion capacity of Lung for CO (DLCO).
  • A full-fledged Allergy Clinic for diagnosis of various Respiratory Allergic Disorders.


    Research Activities

  • Diagnostic value of PCR in sputum for patients of Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
  • Clinico Radiological Comparison of Pulmonary Tuberculosis with and without Diabetes Mellitus.
  • Smoking Habits of Patients and their Attendants coming to the OPD.
  • Bronchial Asthma and Allergy Rhinitis coexisting prevalence and effect of treatment on each other.
  • Publishing paper is the top priority of the department after patient care and academics.
