The Department of Pathology has well-equipped laboratories for Histopathology, Cytopathology, Immunology and Haematology to support the hospital's diagnostic services. The departmental museum has a laudable collection of gross specimens and abundant photomicrographs. Electrophoresis and HPLC facilities are also available. Blood Bank has a facility for apheresis, and the central laboratory, which operates 24x7, is equipped with a state-of-the-art dry chemistry analyzer, vitros 5600. Postgraduate teaching is done on a penta-head microscope attached to a large monitor. Excellent infrastructure is available for research work conducted by faculty and students.
Histopathology involves microscopic examination of tissues and/or cells to diagnose and research diseases in the tissues. Before it reaches the examiner's desk, the tissue goes through several procedures that allow the examiner to make a specific diagnosis after a comprehensive microscopic examination.
To accomplish this, the tissue must be treated so that it can be studied microscopically and all of the tissue's structures can be distinguished.
1. As biopsy – a small piece of lesion or tumour which in sent for diagnosis before final removal of the lesion or the tumour (incisional biopsy)
2. If the whole of the tumour or lesion is sent for examination and diagnosis by immunohistochemistry (IHC) combined anatomical, immunological and biochemical techniques to image discrete components in tissue by using appropriately labelled antibodies to bind specifically to their target antigens in situ.
Cytopathology is a diagnostic technique that examines cells that have been exfoliated (shed), scraped from the body or aspirated with a fine needle. Cell specimens are processed into slides and examined microscopically to diagnose cancer, precancerous conditions, benign tumours and some infectious conditions. In FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology), we perform fine needle aspiration biopsies on superficial nodules.
Patients must have a written FNA order specifying the biopsy site (include an indication if the site is palpable or if ultrasound will be required), clinical history, ordering physician name and contact information.
Papanilaou test (pap test) is a method of cervical screening used to detect potentially precancerous and cancerous conditions in the cervix.
There is cytologic evaluation of multiple fluid types, including body cavity fluids, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid and tracheal and bronchoalveolar washes.
