About Diploma in Pharmacy

Diploma in Pharmacy from Era University is a career oriented, entry level diploma course. Students who plan to pursue a long term career in pharmaceuticals opt for this course as pharmacy continues to be a very promising field of medicine. The program prepares students to work as a licensed pharmacist in hospitals, community pharmacies and other pharmaceutical-related fields. On successful completion of the diploma, the student applies to the council and is awarded the status of a registered / licensed pharmacist.

Course Overview

This course has been divided in three parts. Part I and II deals with the theory and practical components of all the sciences involved in development, production, marketing, sales and distribution of pharmaceutical products. Part III is the most essential training part which involves training in hospital pharmacy / community pharmacy / hospitals.

(As per the Pharmacy Council of India this is an essential part of the course and subject to availability of seats students are provided on-the-job-training / internship in an institute of repute).

During the course of practical training the trainee is given exposure to -

  • knowledge of record keeping
  • practical experience in proper use of common pharmaceutical apparatus
  • reading, understanding, copying and dispensing of prescription
  • storage of drugs and medical preparations

Course contents taught at Era University have been adopted as prescribed by Pharmacy Council of India. The curriculum comprises of a basic knowledge of the structure and function of different human body systems, herbal/chemical origins of medicine/drugs. An in-depth understanding the effects of drugs on the human body and practical knowledge of maintaining and operating a pharmacy is also imparted.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  • to understand the structure and function of various systems of the human body
  • to be able to prepare various traditional dosage types, as well as the ability to control machines and operations involved in the preparation and packaging process
  • to understand the structure, chemistry, physiochemical properties, adverse effects and therapeutic value of drugs
  • acquire knowledge of the classification, identification, nomenclature and methods of preparation of simple compounds
  • to learn about the Legislations related to the profession of pharmacy in India
  • to have fundamental and practical knowledge of drug store management, inventory control and market research
  • to have basic knowledge of the hospital and clinical pharmacy with an understanding of both the diseases and services provided by hospitals
  • to understand the Fundamentals of Pharmacognosy such as scope, classification of crude drugs, their identification and evaluation, phytochemicals present in them and their medicinal properties

COURSE DURATION

2 years

ELIGIBILITY
  • Candidate shall have passed 10+2 examination conducted by the respective state/central government authorities recognized as equivalent to 10+2 examination by the association of Indian universities (AIU) with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry, mathematics (PCM) and or Biology (PCB/PCMB) as optional subjects individually. Any other qualification approved by the Pharmacy Council of India as equivalent to any of the above examinations.
  • Provided that a student should complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the course.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

On successful completion of the diploma course one can work in various public and private sector institutions as pharmacist, quality analyst or production executives. Diploma holders can also opt for higher studies through lateral entry in B.Pharma second year.
