PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Masters of Physiotherapy course work trains students in treatment planning, management, administration of physiotherapy treatment and provision of patient support. They acquire in-depth knowledge of structure and function of human body, movement dysfunction with their underlying causes and principles of physiotherapeutic interventions for restoring movement dysfunction towards normalcy. They learn to demonstrate skills in physical & functional diagnosis pertaining to patient under care, ability to critically appraise recent physiotherapeutic and related literature from journals & adopt diagnostic & therapeutic procedures based on it. The students also perform independent research within the department and help the department and the team in treatment planning of the patient.

Students can choose from a variety of specialisation areas such as sports physiotherapy, Neurological Physiotherapy, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy.

Today MPT has emerged as one of the demanding professions and offers ample career opportunities to the aspirants of this program. The course offers a semester system in general, with a dissertation in the final year. Anyone with an interest in health science and aspiring to be a physiotherapist, has lucrative and promising career options.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to –

  • Execute all routine physiotherapeutic procedures with evidence based practice.
  • Work as a prominent member of the multidisciplinary physiotherapy team and treat all the conditions which need physiotherapeutic procedures.
  • Able to provide adequate knowledge about the treatment procedures and its benefit.
  • Able to transfer knowledge and skills to students as well young professionals.
  • Able to perform independent physiotherapy assessment and treatment for patients.
  • Undertake independent research in the field of physiotherapy.
  • Learn multidisciplinary practice skills.
  • Able to practice and assess patients independently.
  • On successful completion of M.P.T. programme, the physiotherapist professional will be able to take up physiotherapy teaching assignments independently for undergraduate teaching programme. They will be able to prepare project proposal with selected research design and interpret the evaluated outcome measures (using sound data processing techniques and statistical methods). They will be able to practice in his / her specialty area with advanced knowledge and skills.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
  • The candidate must have passed the Bachelor of physiotherapy recognized by any University with 50% pass marks.

Post graduates of physiotherapy program can easily find employment opportunities in Universities, Colleges, Multispecialty hospitals/ Nursing homes/ sports teams/ fitness centers/ community rehabilitation / health planning boards/ health promotion services in both private and public sectors. Post-graduates of physiotherapy get employed in top Universities, Colleges, Hospitals and Health centres with good competitive pay packages.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

1ST YEAR
(1ST& 2ND SEMESTER)

BASIC THERAPEUTICS SCIENCES:
Introduction to skill and core courses like exercise therapy, electrotherapy, basic biomechanics.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY & BIOSTATISTICS:
Importance of research in the field of physiotherapy, use of biostatistics, sample collection, data analysis, probability, clinical significance.

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
Interpretation of the physiological effects of the vital parameters of simple laboratory tests, such as “stress test”, knowledge of energy production expenditure and transfer and Exercise performance.

PHYSIOTHERAPY & ETHICS:
Rules of professional conduct, IAP rules and regulations, APTA and WCPT guidelines, central council guidelines.

ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT:
Management of department, clinic or hospital with administration of finance, marketing and quality treatment.

COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION:
Rehabilitation: definition, types, principles of community based rehabilitation, planning and management of CBR programmes, role of government social workers and voluntary organizations in CBR.

BIOMECHANICS & CLINICAL KINESIOLOGY: 
Structure and functions of all joints of human body with clinical correlation. 

PEDAGOGY IN PHYSIOTHERAPY EDUCATION: 
Dynamics of teaching and learning, planning of effective teaching sessions in physiotherapy. Teaching aids, teaching skills evaluation procedure.

EXERCISE TESTING & PRESCRIPTION:
Interpretation, testing and prescription of different types of exercise performances with effect on different parts of body

2ND YR
(3RD AND 4TH SEMESTER)

3rd and 4th semester will include courses as per following specialization

  • Neurosciences
  • Musculoskeletal
  • Cardiopulmonary
  • Sports medicine

PHYSIOTHERAPEUTICS:
Diagnosis, assessment and management

EVIDENCE BASED PHYSIOTHERAPY PRACTICE:
Clinical practice on the basis of evidences

DISSERTATION:
Each student shall work on a new research project and submit thesis with publications.

NEUROLOGICAL CONDITIONS & MANAGEMENT:
Assessment and planning of physiotherapy goals with advanced effective treatment for different neurological conditions.

PEDIATRIC CONDITIONS:
Overview of conditions in paediatric age group with assessment and management

MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS & MANAGEMENT:
Assessment and planning of physiotherapy goals with advanced effective treatment for different musculoskeletal conditions.

CARDIOPULOMONARY CONDITIONS & MANAGEMENT:
Assessment and planning of physiotherapy goals with advanced effective treatment for different cardiothoracic conditions.

SPORTS CONDITIONS & MANAGEMENT:
Assessment and planning of physiotherapy goals with advanced effective treatment for different sports conditions.

PATHOMECHANICS:
Mechanics involved in different clinical orpathological conditions with relative corrections.

CARDIOPULOMONARY ASSESSMENT:
Different types of assessment procedures, techniques, modalities involved in cardiopulmonary conditions.

SEMINAR AND CASE PRESENTATIONS:
Paper presentation with critical analysis, clinical case presentation with discussion on assessment and treatment.

CLINICAL POSTINGS: Regular postings of each student in different departments.
