Department of Optometry, Era University, Lucknow celebrated "World Sight Day" which takes place every year on the second Thursday of the month of October for raising awareness about various eye-related diseases. A rally from the Kalam Centre, KGMU to the Administrative Block Era University was also taken out on the occasion. The rally was flagged off by the Vice Chancellor of King George's Medical University, Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt at the Kalam Centre in presence of Prof. Abbas Ali Mahdi, Vice Chancellor of Era University, Prof. Vinod Jain, Dean Faculty of Paramedical Sciences, KGMU, Prof. R.A.S. Kushwaha, Chief Proctor, KGMU, and Dr. Ragini Mishra, In-charge of Optometry Department of Era University. More than three hundred students of Optometry of Era University participated in the rally in which they raised slogans to create awareness in the general public about blindness and eye related problems. Students also staged street plays (Nukkad Nataks) for eye care awareness in the masses.
At Kalam Centre, while flagging off the rally Vice Chancellor of KGMU Prof. Bhatt appreciated the efforts of the Department of Optometry in organizing mass awareness program of World Singh Day. He said that eye-related diseases are mostly preventable if timely treatment is initiated and for that such types of programs are highly beneficial to create awareness in the general public.
The rally ended at Era University where a program was held in which Prof. Vinod Jain, Dean, Faculty of Paramedical Sciences, KGMU was the Chief Guest. Prof. Abbas Ali Mahdi, Vice Chancellor, Era University presided over the function. Prof. Ashok Kumar Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Prof. Riaz Mehdi, Dean, Faculty of Paramedical Sciences, Prof. Rina Bhowal, Dean, Faculty of Nursing, Prof. Pragati Garg, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Era University also graced the function and spoke on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion Prof. Mahdi said that over 40 million people world over suffer from blindness and one in four persons suffering from blindness could have been saved have timely preventive measures were taken. He said that lifestyle changes, aging and stress are the major factors contributing to developing cataract, diabetes and blood pressure related eye disorders. Prof. Jain said that such types of awareness programs are needed to make people at large aware of preventable eye-related diseases.
