COPD Day was observed by the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Era's Lucknow Medical College and Hospital on.
Speaking on this occasion Professor Rajendra Prasad, Director, Medical Education and HOD, Pulmonary Medicine, Era's Lucknow Medical College and Hospital and Former Director Vallabh Bhai Patel Chest Institute, Delhi said that the aim of observing this day is to raise awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and improve COPD care throughout the world. He said that COPD is a common preventable and treatable disease that is characterized by persistent airflow limitation and respiratory symptoms due to alveolar and airway abnormalities usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases. The most common respiratory symptoms of COPD include dyspnea, cough and/or sputum production. This year theme for World COPD Day is "NEVER TOO EARLY NEVER TOO LATE".
COPD is one of the world's most prevalent respiratory diseases. It affects more than 300 million people globally. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, causing more than 3.17 million deaths every year.>90% of COPD death occurs in low and middle-income countries.
Over a hundred patients and their attendants participated in the programme. Dr.Anand Verma, Dr.Anamika Verma, Dr. Rahul Rathore, Dr. Laxmi, and P.G students were also present on this occasion.
