Department of Surgery, Era's Lucknow Medical College & Hospital organized a lecture on HYPOSPADIAS. Dr. Sudhir Jain, Director- Professor, Department of Surgery and In-charge Division of Urology, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, delivered the talk. HYPOSPADIAS is a birth defect (congenital condition) in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside of the penis instead of at the tip. The urethra is the tube through which urine drains from the bladder and exits from the body.
Speaking on the occasion Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Abbas Ali Mahdi said that the incidence of hypospadias is 1 in 200 male children. He said that although as of now not much is known regarding the cause of the disease it is said that genes and chemicals including heavy metals, including lead and cadmium, may play a role in the causation of disease by influencing the hormones.
Delivering his talk Prof. Jain said that surgery usually restores the normal appearance of child's penis. With successful treatment of hypospadias, most males can have normal urination and reproduction. He said that most infants with hypospadias are diagnosed soon after birth while still in the hospital.
